Became a Reformed minister at Ouddorp (1639–1653) on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee. Married Josyntgen Claesdochter van Egmond on 16 June 1641 in Haarlem. Had 4 sons and 3 daughters.

Member of the Burgher Council, Deacon, Marriage Commissioner, and Elder. His death was recorded in the Commander's Daily Register — an extraordinary honour.

A Legacy Carved in History
From the battlefield of Blood River to the founding of a capital city — the Pretorius name is woven into the fabric of South African history.
The Battle of Blood River
On 16 December 1838, Andries Wilhelmus Jacobus Pretorius led a Voortrekker force against the Zulu kingdom at the Ncome River, in what became known as the Battle of Blood River. The Voortrekkers formed their ox wagons into a defensive laager formation on the river banks. Before the battle, the Voortrekkers made a solemn religious undertaking — the Covenant — vowing to honour the day if God granted them victory. The battle's outcome had profound consequences for the settlement of Natal and the broader course of South African history. It became a central element in Afrikaner collective memory and national identity.
The Great Trek
The Great Trek was the migration of thousands of Dutch-speaking colonists from the Cape Colony into the southern African interior between 1835 and 1846. Trek parties left the eastern frontier districts seeking land, political autonomy, and independence from British rule. Families traveled by ox-wagon through vast grasslands, facing enormous hardships and forming defensive laagers when threatened. Andries Pretorius became one of the most prominent military and political leaders of the Voortrekker movement, ultimately negotiating the Sand River Convention of 1852, which secured British recognition of Transvaal independence.
The Founding of Pretoria
Marthinus Wessel Pretorius, son of Andries, arrived in the area in 1848. In 1854–1855, he purchased the farms Elandspoort and Koedoespoort and established a town for the Transvaal state. He named it Pretoria, in honour of his father Andries. The town replaced Potchefstroom as the Transvaal capital in 1860, received city status in 1931, and has served as South Africa's administrative capital since 1994. Marthinus himself became the first President of the South African Republic (1857–1871) and also served as President of the Orange Free State (1859–1863).
